Early Years Rights Respecting Schools The 1989 United Nations Rights of the Convention (UNCRC) is a special convention that recognises the Needs and Rights of children. The UNCRC was ratified in the UK in 1991, meaning that the Government would make sure through polices and systems that children’s Rights are upheld. The UNCRC is made up of 54 Rights, these are called Articles. Pamphill Pre-School were asked to be a pilot setting for Rights Respecting by Dorset County Council, to see if Rights Respecting could be implemented into early years, as it has been established in schools for a little while. We undertook a lot of training as a staffing team, and we are pleased to conclude that Rights Respecting has had a hugely positive impact on how we work and how our children learn. We recognise under the 1989 UNCRC that children have Rights, and we seek as a setting to help children understand their Rights, but also that Right’s brings Responsibility. For example, children have a Right to play, but they also have a Responsibility to look after the toys so they don’t get broken. We will tell you more about this when we join!! We gained our Level 1 Award in July 2011.
